Klaus Galsgaard - solar guides

Hi, my name's Klaus Galsgaard:

Image of Klaus GalsgaardHow did you become interested in astronomy?
It all started when I was about 12 years old. One evening I went star gazing with my grandpa and he told me some of the stories about the constellations. From then on my interest in astronomy was assured and now it is a passion.

Do you know what country this map and flag represent?

Image of a Viking artifactImage of a VikingIt is my home country of Denmark, the land of the Vikings. They travelled across the North Sea to conquer the UK! I followed in their footsteps and travelled to St Andrews University, Scotland to work in the solar physics group for several years. Now I'm back again in Denmark.

I am now doing numerical (computer) simulations of basic problems related to different features of the solar atmosphere at the University of Copenhagen. I use powerful computers to try to predict and understand what is happening on the Sun. When I was in high school a friend of mine pulled off the tab of a coke can and on the back was a question 'what is the corona'? I did not know the answer then, but all the work that I do today is actually related to that question. Isn't life strange? I hope you will achieve some of the dreams that you have for your future!

I used to spend a lot of time on sports, especially rowing. I was even selected for the Danish national team - for the Nordic championships and the junior world-championships. No medals here though as the others were far too strong for us. Rowing in competitions took up a lot of time, so now I am doing tri-athlons.

I don't have so much spare time these days, with a wife and children. I met my wife at university. She needed help to do her mathematics and physics. You never know where an innocent question can lead you!
