magnetic Sun

What is the magnetic Sun? The Sun is like a huge magnet, but what a magnet! It's a magnet that is constantly changing and occasionally has temper tantrums when it explodes violently.

You can find out more about the magnetic Sun in this section.

See how the streams of hot plasma trace out the Sun's magnetic field in loops - the tangled Sun. Follow the small explosions that are caused by the magnetic Sun, in the solar fireflies and the massive solar explosions called flares which can cause chaos here on Earth!

Hinode was launched in September 2006 from Japan, find out what we're learning about the Sun and meet the young scientists working with the Hinode team.

The Solar Dynamics Observatory -SDO - was launched in February 2010 and is now providing some spectacular images.
