Jupiter

The planet Jupiter is not spherical - it is rotating so rapidly that it quite clearly bulges at its equator.

There is a Giant Red Spot in the atmosphere of Jupiter. Scientists think that this is a massive storm that might have been raging for hundreds of years.

The Giant Red Spot is bigger than the planet Earth.

Jupiter was the king of the Roman gods, so it is not surprising that this name was given to the largest planet.

Jupiter is a huge planet. About 1,300 Earths could fit inside it. Jupiter has four major moons:
Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. They were discovered by Galileo with his newly-invented telescope. Io (pictured on the right) is the only object in the solar system, apart from Earth, on which an active volcano has been observed.
