Quasar
This word is an abbreviation of 'quasi-stellar radio
source' or 'quasi-stellar object'. They were called
'quasi-stellar' because when they were first observed
they appeared as point-like sources of radiation,
but they clearly were not stars. They are now
considered to be a special class of galaxy in
which the centre of the galaxy contains a huge
black hole. Quasars radiate extraordinary power
at many wavelengths (approximately 100,000 times
that of our own galaxy the Milky Way).
